Nea Silata (= SLT) (Miocene to of Greece)

Where: Chalkidiki, Greece (40.4° N, 23.1° E: paleocoordinates 40.1° N, 22.8° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: MN13/14 mammal zone, Silata Member (Gonia Formation), Late/Upper Miocene to Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 3.6 Ma)

• Based on biochronology, the age of the locality is on the boundary of Miocene/Pliocene

Environment/lithology: fluvial-lacustrine; silty claystone and muddy siltstone

• The ecological adaptation of each taxon, the composition of the fauna, the lithology of the fossiliferous beds, the presence of the non-micromammalian fossils and the lignite elements suggest an open and dry environment, with water spots (lakes, swamps, springs) in the wider area.
• The micromammals come from bed 2 (silts-clays) and bed 3 (clayey-marly

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils

Collected by G. E. Syrides; K. V. Vasileiadou in 1980-

Collection methods: surface (in situ), sieve, ,

• During the 1980s, one of the authors (G.S.), working for his thesis in the area, found a level with micromammals near the village of Nea Silata (Fig. 1). At that time, he collected a poor sample and the fauna initially determined by Aguilar suggested an early Ruscinian age for the corresponding deposits (Syrides 1990).
