El Garabatal (Paleocene of Argentina)

Where: Jujuy, Argentina (24.3° S, 64.4° W: paleocoordinates 27.0° S, 52.9° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Maíz Gordo Formation, Late/Upper Paleocene (58.7 - 55.8 Ma)

• "Curviarculia lamasi sp. nov. was collected from a section 235m thick...The fossiliferous strata are composed of calcareous couplets within the lower third of the formation, 95m above the base of the section (see del Papa 1994)"

Environment/lithology: lacustrine - small; lithified carbonate

• These carbonate laminites are interpreted as having formed in a stable, chemically stratified water body of meromictic type, at an internal lake position

•"The Maíz Gordo Formation, related to the last main flooding event of the basin, shows typical lacustrine limestone values, possibly with low organic productivity"

•The lake which formed the Maiz Gordo formation must have been very shallow because it has alternating lacustrine and partially exposed mudflat deposits

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: adpression
