Where: Shandong, China (36.6° N, 118.7° E: paleocoordinates 36.5° N, 116.3° E)
• coordinate based on nearby landmark
• local area-level geographic resolution
When: Shanwang Formation, Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)
• Paleomagnetic and radiometric evidence correlates the Shanwang Formation to subchron 5En of Chron 5. The main part of the Shanwang Formation covers 18.524 Ma to 18.056 Ma, with the Shanwang Formation as a whole covering 18.5 ma to 17.5 Ma. Recent paleontological results show that the Shanwang Formation can be correlated with the European mammalian zone MN instead of the previous MN5.
