Megafauna of Surrett Canyon Fm. (Chesterian); Idaho: Section C-Christian Gulch (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Custer County, Idaho (44.4° N, 113.9° W: paleocoordinates 4.2° N, 41.4° W)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Surrett Canyon Formation, Chesterian (335.5 - 323.2 Ma)

• The Surrett Canyon is underlain by the South Creek Fm. and overlain gradationaly by the Arco Hills Fm.

Environment/lithology: intraclastic, peloidal, shelly/skeletal, argillaceous, silty, cherty/siliceous wackestone and intraclastic, peloidal, shelly/skeletal, argillaceous packstone

• The lower portion of the section is 54m thick and is dominated by skeletal wackestones and pelletoidal-foraminiferal wackestones. Minor lithologies include thin skeletal-pelletoidal packsotnes and fossiliferous mudstones. Breccia occurs in unit 10. The overlying segment is approx. 16m thick. It is distinguished by argillaceous bioclastic-intraclastic wacke/packstone separated by a sparse skeletal wackestone. This segment is capped by a thick skeletal-pelletoidal packstone. Units 18-52 of the section represent a combined thickness of 144m. THe rock types are dominted by thick sequences of whole fossil skeletal wackestones and packstones. The rocks are periodically separted by argillaceous bioclastic-intraclstic wacke/packstones. Also present is the distinct silty quartzose mud/wackestone used for correlation. The segment is capped by a whole fossil bryozoan-coral packstone. The remaining 44m of the section is dominated by argillaceous bioclastic wacke/packstone, silty quartzose mud/wackestone, and skeletal pelletoidal wackestones. Concentrations of nodular and lenticular chert occur in units 45 & 57.
