Catatumbo Basin Paleocene (Paleocene of Colombia)

Where: Norte de Santander, Colombia (9.0° N, 73.0° W: paleocoordinates 6.4° N, 60.5° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Los Cuervos Formation, Late/Upper Paleocene (58.7 - 55.8 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lagoonal; lithified, gray, silty, carbonaceous shale and lithified, argillaceous, silty claystone

• The Palaeocene formation show evidence that was deposited in a brackish marine to fresh-water environment.
• The formation is composed mainly of claystones and shales with coal beds sandwiched in its lower strata and some sandstone beds throughout. The lowermost deposits, measuring 75 meters in thickness, consist of dark grey carbonaceous shales and claystones interbedded with micaceous-carbonaceous siltstones, fine-grained sandstones and narrow coal seams. Occasionally thin limestones showing a con-in-cone structure have been noted. The coals are lignitic to bituminous. Above the coal series, the Los Cuervos is made up of grey and greenish-grey, partly silty and commonly sideritic claystones, the siderite occurring as spherules generally less than 1 millimeter in diameter.

Size class: microfossils

• Pollen grains

Preservation: original sporopollenin

Collection methods: chemical

• From each coal or lignite layer several individual samples were analyzed, or the results of several samples were pooled.
