Jaguey Grande quarry J-4 (Oligocene to of Cuba)

Where: Matanzas, Cuba (22.5° N, 81.1° W: paleocoordinates 22.8° N, 76.9° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Colón Formation, Late/Upper Oligocene to Late/Upper Oligocene (28.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• The Colón Formation is conformably overlain by the Güines Formation, which crops out extensively in this area and is currently correlated with the Lagunitas Formation in central Cuba. (Orihuela et al., 2019). It is disconformally covered by the Canimar formation. (Lopez et al., 2019). Underlying Formation: It is unclear what the underlying formation is. Thickness: Core samples collected near this location suggest a maximum thickness no greater than 65 m, of which the upper 5–20 m is exposed at these quarries (Franco et al., 1992).

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: platform or shelf-margin reef; lithified limestone

• There is new evidence that counters the restricted, shallow intertidal, near-estuarine depositional environment as mentioned by the authors. New evidence suggests that it is an open, deeper neritic-shelf environment, that was a warm tropical, relatively shallow shelf, fore-reef setting, which may have been near the slope (Orihuela Leon et al., 2019).
• The limestone consists of medium to fine grained calcarenites, biogenic sand, biodetrital silty chalk, and calcareous marls. The fossils associated with the decapods comprise a diverse fauna, with invertebrates including pelecypods, gastropods, and corals; an abundant and diverse fauna of microfossils (Bermúdez, 1961; Franco et al., 1992); and vertebrates including dugongs, turtles, sharks, rays, and fishes.
