•Mummified leaves were cleared with 2% potassium hydroxide (KOH), with an initial few minutes bleaching in a 4% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) solution (= household bleach) for darker specimens. Bulk macerations were performed by dissolving the sediment with 43% hydrofluoric acid (HF) in order to isolate the cuticles from the rock. The cuticles were then bleached following the procedure outlined above.
