Western Prince of Wales Island, Reef, GSC loc. C26845 (Devonian of Canada)

Also known as Reef 1521

Where: Nunavut, Canada (73.5° N, 100.0° W: paleocoordinates 2.2° S, 30.2° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Lochkovian (419.2 - 410.8 Ma)

• Unnamed formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; shelly/skeletal, gray, argillaceous wackestone

• Deposits in this region are of two general kinds: shallow-water stable carbonate platform (generally in the NW part of Arctic Archipelago) and deeper basinal facies (generally to the SE). This collection is in the former. "The reef described herein is a small-scale carbonate buildup or bioherm which is probably a framework reef. It is approximately 10 m high and 5 m wide. The bioherm is composed of lime boudnstone, containing common to abundant stromatoporoides, favositid corals, common crinoidal debris, and rare brachiopods...Some of the flanks are partially dolomitized and consist of unfossiliferous lime-mudstone...Relattively high energy environments prevailed at and adjacent to the bioherm..." Smith interprets reef as falling in the third of six zones from onshore to offshore.
• "Lime wackestone; thin bedded, wavy; medium grey, weathering yellow-brown to pale yellow-orange; well indurated; argillaceous; extremely fossiliferous; abundant crinoids, common to abundant fish, brachiopods, trilobites..."

Reposited in the GSC

• Smith gives specimen counts.
