East Turkana - Area 131- Okote- FxJj 20E (Pleistocene of Kenya)

Also known as FxJj 20 East

Where: Kenya (4.2° N, 36.4° E: paleocoordinates 4.1° N, 36.3° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Okote Member (Koobi Fora Formation), Calabrian (1.8 - 0.8 Ma)

• Maximum age= 1.64 +/- 0.03 Ma (Base of Okote Tuff, K/Ar and Ar/Ar dating);

•Minimum age = 1.4 Ma ( Chari Tuff, K/Ar and Ar/Ar dating).

•Datum plane is the Conglomeratic sandstone. Section extends -12.2 meters below datum plane.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: fluvial-deltaic; poorly lithified, bioturbated, pebbly, tuffaceous, calcareous sandstone and poorly lithified, bioturbated, tuffaceous, sandy, calcareous mudstone

• Channel and overbank deposits of a floodplain. Fauna suggests grasslands, riparian gallery forest, and aquatic/ marshy habitats.
• Massive bed of mudstones reaches a maximum thickness of 1.3 m. Bioturbation as evidenced by numerous rootcasts and rodent burrows. This massive tuffaceous ssandy mudstone unit can be divided into two subunits: (1) mudstones are greyish-orange and compacted and comprosed of tuffaceous silts and sands with medium to fine grain sizes. (2) mudstones are orange-brown, less compacted and contain more sand with numerous large irregular-shaped calcium carbonate nodules and small calcareous concretions.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: quarrying, surface (in situ), mechanical, sieve,
