N112/f503 - Tongariro (Landon Series) (Oligocene of New Zealand)

Also known as GS 5877

Where: New Zealand (39.0° S, 175.5° E: paleocoordinates 49.1° S, 179.1° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Oligocene (33.9 - 23.0 Ma)

• Of the Landon series, no formal lithostratigraphic determination. Whaingaroan to Duntroonian age (early to middle Oligocene). The Landon series unconformably overlies Mesozoic greywacke and argillite, and is overlain, unconformably by greywacke conglomerates of the Taranaki series. In Okupata Stream is exposed 150 ft of hard limestone, overlain by 150 ft of calcareous greensand with some bands of mudstone.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified, green, calcareous sandstone

• Shallow-water siliciclastic environment.
• Assumed to be calcareous greensand, rather than hard limestone.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: Collected by Gregg et al. (N.Z. Geo. Surv.) Collections probably reposited in IGNS (USGS) collections.
