Hilltop Church Roadcut (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Menifee County, Kentucky (38.0° N, 83.6° W: paleocoordinates 20.6° S, 31.2° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Nada Member (Borden Formation), Chadian (346.7 - 340.0 Ma)

• Conodont and ammonoid evidence thus relate the Nada assemblage to a relatively narrow range of late middle Osagean age corresponding to the latest Tournaisianor, possibly, earliest Visean portion of the Fascipericyclys-Ammonellipsites Zone.

•JA: latest Tournasian and earliest Visean correspond to Chadian

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, gray, green, red shale and lithified, glauconitic siltstone

• The Nada sequence at Hilltop Church consists of 6.0 m of dark-red and greenish-gray, platy shale which is overlain by a resistant, 0.5 m-thick bed of glauconitic siltstone. Ammonoids occur in small 2-10 cm phosphatic nodules in the upper half of the shale sequence, 0.1 ot 2.5 m below the base of the siltstone.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: concretion

Reposited in the SUI
