Leipers - Wilson, 1949 (Ordovician of the United States)

Where: Tennessee (35.5° N, 86.5° W: paleocoordinates 27.9° S, 64.2° W)

• basin-level geographic resolution

When: Amorphognathus superbus conodont zone, Leipers Formation, Maysvillian (452.0 - 449.5 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified, bioturbated, phosphatic, shelly/skeletal, gray packstone and mudstone

• Geologic information from field notes of S.M. Holland and M.E. Patzkowsky
• formation includes two principal facies. shallow subtidal: very thin to thin or nodular beds of skeletal packstone, separated by very thin beds of calcareous shale. highly bioturbated, locally phosphatic. sand shoal: crinoidal grainstone, phosphatic, with large-scale trough cross-bedding. formation also includes local patches of a more restricted shallow subtidal facies with medium beds of skeletal wackestone and packstone, separated by thin partings of dark gray shale.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: original calcite, replaced with calcite
