Millville Well (unknown depths) - Kirkwood Formation (Miocene of the United States)

Where: Cumberland County, New Jersey (39.4° N, 75.0° W: paleocoordinates 39.6° N, 70.6° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Shiloh Marl Member (Kirkwood Formation), Early/Lower Miocene (23.0 - 16.0 Ma)

• No lithostratigraphic details or stratigraphic relationships provided in text. Equivalent in age and slightly older than the Calvert Formaiton of Maryland and Virginia. Overlain by the Cohansey Sand with a time transgressive contact, Kirkwood Formation is Burdigalian-Langhian in age. Collection from various levels in the well, but mostly from between the deptths of 212 and 580 ft. The base of Miocene and the top of the Vincentown (Eocene) is thought to be at 580 ft. Additional material was obtained from another local well between 212 and 255 ft.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coastal; poorly lithified sandstone

• No geologic or paleoenvironmental data reported in text. Deposited in a sublittoral to nearshore environments
• Fossiliferous sandstone and quartzite.

Size class: macrofossils

Reposited in the USNM

• Specific collection is housed at the USNM and was donated by Dr Hildegard Van Hagen of Atlantic City, NJ. Material also reposited in the NJGS in Trenton, New Jersey.
