Locality 169, Bed 14 [Makatini Fm] (Cretaceous of South Africa)

Where: South Africa (27.5° S, 32.2° E: paleocoordinates 46.9° S, 4.0° E)

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Makatini Formation, Late/Upper Aptian (122.5 - 113.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Makatini Fm, whch overlies an unamed pre-Aptian unit and is overlain by the Mzinene Fm. THICKNESS: From a 30 cm bed within ~20 m section. AGE: Aptian IV based on ammonite biostratigraphy. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From siltstone near the middle of the figured section.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, burrowed, shelly/skeletal, brown, gray, carbonaceous siltstone

• ENVIRONMENT: No detailed environmental data reported in text.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Burrowed and cross-laminated grey/buff silts. Lenses of drifted shell debris and logs throughout. LITHIFICATION: Lithified, assumed on the basis of facies descriptions of adjacent beds, and figures from subsequent publications (e.g. Kennedy and Kinger 1977).

Taxonomic list

• COVERAGE: Includes ammonites, brachiopods, bivalves and gastropods. Abundance data may only apply to ammonites. NOMENCLATURE: Some of faunal list derived from authoritive publications, although for the most part this is not the case and taxa lack subgeneric or species-level designations. Nevertheless, authors are specialists and nomenclature appears fairly accurate and modern.
