Arruda dos Vinhos, Serra Isabel level, coral-sponge-crinoid bioherm (Jurassic of Portugal)

Also known as Reef 503

Where: Portugal (39.0° N, 9.1° W: paleocoordinates 33.2° N, 1.2° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Abadia Formation, Kimmeridgian (157.3 - 152.1 Ma)

• Serra Isabel level 30-40 m below the top of the formation

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: reef, buildup or bioherm; lithified reef rocks and lithified marl

• open marine habitat on a slope situated within the lower photic zone and below storm wave base
• 2 subfacies can be differentiated: crinoid-thrombolite mounds and coral dominated associations, which surround the crinoid mounds. The association occurs in a 250 cm thick unit of clayey marls with some thin, partly silty and strongly ferruginous calcareous marlstones.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils, microfossils

Collection methods: peel or thin section,
