Where: Western Cape, South Africa (33.0° S, 18.2° E: paleocoordinates 33.0° S, 17.9° E)
• coordinate based on nearby landmark
• outcrop-level geographic resolution
When: Gravel Member (Varswater Formation), Late/Upper Pliocene to Late/Upper Pliocene (3.6 - 0.0 Ma)
• From Davies 1973, page 722: " According to Hendey's reconstruction, the pliocene beds at Langebaanweg were truncated by a transgression to 27 m which left a low cliff. ... Molluscs of this transgression will certainly have been mixed with those of the pliocene beds. Thus one becomes sceptical of Kensley's claim (1972), taking no account of Hendey's reconstruction, that a collection which he has examined is pliocene; twelve species now live in Saldanha Bay, three on the south and east coasts, and only one is extinct." Likely Pleistocene in age (AJH & JAS).
• member-level stratigraphic resolution
Environment/lithology: coastal; lithified, fine-grained, phosphatic, brown lithology not reported
Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
