Type specimens:

  • Taniwhasaurus oweni: Its type locality is Hamuri Bluff, which is in a Campanian basinal (siliciclastic) sandstone in the Conway Formation of New Zealand
  • Tylosaurus haumuriensis: Its type locality is O32/f9031 [Conway Siltstone], which is in a Piripauan transition zone/lower shoreface siltstone in the Conway Siltstone Formation of New Zealand.
