Polypodiopsida - Equisetales - Equisetidae
Calamites was first used by Suckow (in Acad. Elect. Theod. Palatinae 5: 355. 1784), however, this work pre-dates the starting point for the publication of names of plant fossil taxa (Art. 13.1 of the Vienna Code; McNeill & al. in Regnum Veg. 146. 2006). furthermore, it was not described as a genus, or any other taxonomic rank. However, since it was employed (in practice) as a genus; instead of unranked, it has been assigned to genus level.
