Type specimens:

  • Dimetrodon macrospondylus: AMNH 4012, a set of vertebrae (three sacrals and nine caudals). Its type locality is Tit Mountain, 21 (Belle Plains Formation), which is in an Artinskian terrestrial claystone/limestone in the Belle Plains Formation of Texas.
  • Dimetrodon platycentrus: AMNH 4065, a set of vertebrae (partial vertebral column).
