Atansoria Popov 2000 (lamp shell)

Lingulata - Lingulida - Obolidae

These rare but distinctive shells were referred originally to the family Acrotretidae (Nazarov & Popov 1980), but the baculate shell structure, smooth larval and postlarval shell, and the arrangement of the muscle scars suggest affinity with lingulides of the family Obolidae. However, the concave dorsal valve, significantly reduced dorsal pseudointerarea, and the strongly impressed central muscle scars separated by a median furrow reversed anteriorly into a short median ridge have no analogies any all other known obolid genera. Strongly impressed posterolateral dorsal muscle fields, which include sets of paired umbonal muscle scars, are also among distinctive features of this genus.
