Sontonaella spongiosa Yeh 1987 (radiolarian)

Protozoa - Spumellaria - Angulobracchiidae

Description: Test comprised of small irregular polygonal pore frames without prominent nodes at vertices. Rays unequal in length, increasing gradually in width distally. Two longer rays expanded distally without prominent bulbous tips, one shorter ray terminating in short bifurcating tip with minute spines at distal surface.

Remarks: Sontonaella spongiosa, n. sp.differs from S. blfurcata,n. sp, by lacking well-developed bulbous tips at distal ends of two longer rays, by having three rays unequal in length, and by having a test consisting of small irregular spongy mesh work.

Etymology: Spongiosus-a-um (Latin, adj.) spongy.

Type specimen: NMNS (000057). Its type locality is Suplee-Izee area, OR-589D, which is in a Toarcian marine mudstone/limestone in the Snowshoe Formation of Oregon.

Ecology: passively mobile planktonic omnivore
