Sister taxon: Bathignathus poikilops
Type specimen: BMNH R3589, a skull. Its type locality is Burgersdorp Area, which is in an Anisian terrestrial horizon in the Burgersdorp Formation of South Africa.
Ecology: amphibious carnivore
Distribution: found only at Burgersdorp Area
