Sister taxa: Apterodon altidens, Apterodon gaudryi, Apterodon intermedius, Apterodon macrognathus, Apterodon rauenbergensis, Apterodon saghensis
Type specimen: NHMUK M 85297-85334, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Dur At-Talah (west of the escarpment) - 68.19, which is in a Bartonian/Eocene marginal marine conglomerate in Libya.
