Type specimens:
- Aelurosaurus whaitsi: AMNH 5528, a partial skull. Its type locality is Beaufort West Commonage (Tropidostoma & Cistecephalus Assemblage Zone), which is in a Capitanian/Wuchiapingian terrestrial horizon in the Teekloof Formation of South Africa.
- Aelurosaurus breviceps: AMNH 5514, a partial skull (Snout and dentary). Its type locality is Beaufort West Commonage (Tropidostoma & Cistecephalus Assemblage Zone), which is in a Capitanian/Wuchiapingian terrestrial horizon in the Teekloof Formation of South Africa.
