Type specimen: AMNH 5530a, a partial skull. Its type locality is Beaufort West Commonage (Tropidostoma & Cistecephalus Assemblage Zone), which is in a Capitanian/Wuchiapingian terrestrial horizon in the Teekloof Formation of South Africa.
