Type specimens:
- Praepleurocystis watkinsi: USNM 4640. Its type locality is Bromide Formation, Rock Crossing, Criner Hills, Carter County, Oklahoma, which is in the Blackriveran of horizon the Bromide Formation Oklahoma.
- Praepleurocystis nodosus: U. W. 1561/1. Its type locality is Quarry 3.6 miles west-northwest of Fennimore, which is in a Blackriveran carbonate limestone in the McGregor Formation of Wisconsin.
