Sister taxa: Berardius arnuxii, Berardius bairdii, Berardius minimus
Type specimen: SCM 5530-6, a partial skull (incomplete skull including the left tympanic bulla and its corresponding periotic, lacking the rostral portion; the posterior fourth of the horizontal ramus of ). Its type locality is Sobama Beach, which is in a Serravallian/Tortonian terrestrial mudstone in the Tsurushi Formation of Japan.
Ecology: aquatic piscivore-carnivore
Distribution: found only at Sobama Beach
