Type specimens:
- Aphelops mutilus: AMNH 17584, a skull. Its type locality is Aphelops Draw Quarries, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Snake Creek Formation of Nebraska.
- Aphelops kimballensis: UNSM 5788, a skull.
- Aphelops longinaris: Its type locality is Wray, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Colorado.

• Hemphillian of United States (22: Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas, Washington collections)
• Miocene of United States (1: Nebraska)
