Taxonomy
Buccinum dirum was named by Reeve (1846). It is extant.

It was recombined as Chrysodomus dirus by Carpenter (1863) and Packard (1918); it was recombined as Euthria dira by Tryon (1881); it was recombined as Searlesia dira by Dall (1921); it was recombined as Kelletia (Searlesia) dira by Grant and IV and Gale (1931).
