Taxonomy
Astrea dendroidea was named by Lamouroux (1821). It is not extant. It is the type species of Thamnasteria.

It was recombined as Thamnastrea dendroidea by d'Orbigny (1850); it was recombined as Thamnastraea dendroidea by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857), de Fromentel (1861); it was recombined as Thamnasteria dendroidea by Geyer (1955).
