Protasteridae was named by Miller (1889). Its type is Protaster. It was considered monophyletic by Dean Shackleton (2005).
It was assigned to Lysophiurae by Schuchert (1915); to Ophiuroidea by Spencer (1934); to Lysophiuricae by Lehmann (1957) and Owen (1965); to Oegophiurida by Hammann and Schmincke (1986); to Asteroidea by Dean Shackleton (2005); and to Lysophiurina by Spencer and Wright (1966), Haude and Thomas (1983), Hotchkiss (1993), Jell and Theron (1999), Boczarowski (2001), Hunter et al. (2007) and Blake et al. (2016).
