Stigmaulax was named by Morch (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 548]. It is extant. Its type is Natica sulcata.

It was reranked as Natica (Stigmaulax) by Cossmann (1924), Gardner (1947), Marincovich (1977).

It was assigned to Natica by Cossmann (1924), Gardner (1947), Marincovich (1977); to Naticidae by Todd (2001); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Naticinae by Woodring (1928), Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
