Taxonomy

Acirsa was named by Mörch (1857) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti R Sepkoski's reference number: 157]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Epitonium (Acirsa) by Dall (1921).

It was assigned to Epitonium by Dall (1921); to Acirsinae by Sohl (1964), Sohl (1964), Kase (1984); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Epitoniidae by Durham (1937), Harris and Palmer (1947), Palmer and Brann (1966), DuShane (1979), Todd (2001), Wienrich (2001), Squires and Saul (2003).

Diagnosis

Reference	Diagnosis
J. W. Durham 1937	Shell more or less heavy, small to medium size; axial ribs usually nearly obsolete; spiral ribs present; basal disk present; aperture entire although inner lin is often very thin; outer lip sharpened.
R. L. Squires and L. R. Saul 2003	Shell acuminate, whorls joined (with only a moderately impressed suture), and not umbilicate. Sculpture much reduced, may be spiral or axial or both; incised spiral grooves usually present. Basal keel absent. Basal disk indistinct but may be defined by a subperipheral ridge (Clench & Turner, 1950; DuShane, 1974, 1979; Kilburn, 1985; Bouchet & Waren, 1986; Dockery, 1993; Neville, 2001).
