Patranomodon was named by Rubidge and Hopson (1990). Its type is Patranomodon nyaphulii.

It was assigned to Galechiridae by Rubidge and Hopson (1990); to Anomodontia by Kammerer and Angielczyk (2009); and to Chainosauria by Fröbisch and Reisz (2011).
