Buccinum sagenum was named by Conrad (1833) [DISTRIBUTION: Middle Eocene; Gulf Coastal Plain.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 16874, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Nassa sagena by Conrad (1834); it was recombined as Phos sagenum by Dall (1890); it was recombined as Phos (Buccitriton) sagenum by Cosmman (1901); it was recombined as Buccitriton sagenum by Conrad (1865), Palmer and Brann (1966).
