Trionychini was named by Gray (1825). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Meylan (1987), Danilov and Vitek (2013).

It was assigned to Trionychinae by Danilov et al. (2014); and to Trionychinae by Meylan (1987), Hutchison (1996), Weisrock and Janzen (2000), Karl (2007), Karl and Lindow (2012), Danilov and Vitek (2013), Karl (2018), Karl and Tichy (2019).

P. A. Meylan 1987	Members of the subfamily Trionychinae with eight or fewer neurals (fused first and second count as two), parietal makes up nearly one-quarter of processus trochlearis oticum, and dorsal margin of apertura narium extemum is strongly emarginate (except in swinhoei and euphraticus).
