Trematopsidae was named by Williston (1910). Its type is Trematops. It was considered monophyletic by Polley and Reisz (2011), Schoch (2013).

It was corrected as Trematopidae by Sumida et al. (1998), Yates and Warren (2000), Martens et al. (2005), Anderson et al. (2008), Bourget and Anderson (2011), Polley and Reisz (2011), Schoch (2013), Schoch and Milner (2014).

It was assigned to Rachitomi by Watson (1919); to Rhachitomi by Kuhn (1946); to Eryopoidea by Carroll (1988); to Dissorophoidea by Sumida et al. (1998), Yates and Warren (2000); to Dissorophoidea by Martens et al. (2005); and to Olsoniformes by Anderson et al. (2008), Bourget and Anderson (2011), Polley and Reisz (2011), Schoch (2013), Schoch and Milner (2014).

Synonyms

Achelomidae was named by Watson (1919). Its type is Acheloma. It was considered monophyletic by Olson (1941), Schoch and Milner (2014).

It was synonymized subjectively with Trematopsidae by Olson (1941); it was synonymized subjectively with Trematopidae by Schoch and Milner (2014).

It was assigned to Rachitomi by Watson (1919); and to Rhachitomi by Kuhn (1946).
