Palaeophiuridae was named by Gregory (1897). Its type is Palaeophiura.

It was synonymized subjectively with Protasteridae by Owen (1965).

It was assigned to Lysophiurae by Gregory (1897); and to Lysophiurae by Schuchert (1915) and Phleger (1936).
