Taxonomy
Ophiura carinata was named by Goldfuss (1833). Its type specimen is Neotype NMB M10637 and is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Geocoma.
It was recombined as Geocoma carinata by d'Orbigny (1850), Boehm (1889), Hess (1960), Spencer and Wright (1966), Frickhinger (1994), Kutscher (1997), Hess and Meyer (2008).
