Disphyllum conjugans was named by Sorauf (1998). It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Shell Rock River, Nora Member, upper biostrome, which is in a Frasnian reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Shell Rock Formation of Iowa.
