Prodocosia was named by Armbruster (1938). Its type is Prodocosia rondaniellides.

It was assigned to Leiini by Armbruster (1938); to Mycetophilidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Tetragoneurinae by Oliveira and Amorim (2021).
