Oligophryne was named by Rohdendorf (1962). Its type is Oligophryne fungivoroides. It is the type genus of Oligophryneidae.
It was assigned to Oligophryneidae by Rohdendorf (1962), Carpenter (1992); and to Oligophrynidae by Ansorge and Krzemiński (1994), Nagatomi and Yang (1998).
