Cunningtoniceras was named by Collignon (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-m Sepkoski's reference number: 901]. Its type is Ammonites cunningtoni.
It was assigned to Acanthoceratidae by Matsumoto and Skwarko (1993); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acanthoceratinae by Kennedy et al. (1988), Kennedy and Cobban (1990), Kennedy (1994), Wright et al. (1996), Mosavinia and Wilmsen (2011), Kennedy (2013), Gale et al. (2018).
It was assigned to Acanthoceratidae by Matsumoto and Skwarko (1993); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acanthoceratinae by Kennedy et al. (1988), Kennedy and Cobban (1990), Kennedy (1994), Wright et al. (1996), Mosavinia and Wilmsen (2011), Kennedy (2013), Gale et al. (2018).
