Lophodus variabilis was named by Newberry and Worthen (1870).

It was recombined as Campodus variabilis by Hay (1902), Eastman (1903), Branson (1933); it was recombined as Agassizodus variabilis by Lucas and Estep (2000), Clapham (2015).
