Mastodonsaurus giganteus
Taxonomy
Salamandroides giganteus was named by Jaeger (1828). Its type specimen is GPIT Am 678, a partial skull (both exoccipitals in articulation, posterior part of parasphenoid, small medial fragments of both pterygoids, and basalmost parts of the otic ossification), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Gaildorf, which is in a Longobardian estuary/bay shale in the Erfurt Formation of Germany.
It was considered a nomen vanum by Welles and Cosgriff (1965); it was recombined as Mastodonsaurus giganteus by Hay (1902), Swinton (1934), Kuhn (1971), Schoch (1999), Damiani (2001), Moser and Schoch (2007) and Schoch (2013).
