Taxonomy

Phlegethontia was named by Cope (1871). It is not extant. Its type is Phlegethontia linearis.

It was assigned to Molgophidae by Hay (1902); to Dolichosomidae by Gregory (1948); to Phlegethontiidae by McGinnis (1967), Lund (1978), Thayer (1985), Carroll (1988), Carroll et al. (1998), Anderson (2002); and to Aistopoda by Maddin et al. (2012).

Synonyms

Aornerpeton was named by Lund (1978). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Phlegethontia by Anderson (2002).

It was assigned to Phlegethontiidae by Lund (1978), Carroll et al. (1998).
Phlegethontia phanerhapha was named by Thayer (1985). Its type specimen is UALP 5154, a partial skull (posterior braincase with parts of occiput), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Swisshelm Mts. amphibian site, which is in a Westphalian A/Westphalian B shallow subtidal limestone in the Black Prince Limestone Formation of Arizona.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Anderson (2002).
