Psychroptilus burrettae was named by Riek (1976). Its type specimen is Univ Tasmania 94563, an exoskeleton, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Hellyer Gorge, which is in a Gzhelian lacustrine - small claystone in the Wynyard Formation of Australia.
