Taxonomy
Mastodonsaurus cappelensis was named by Wepfer (1923). It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Kappel, which is in an Anisian terrestrial horizon in Germany.

It was recombined as Parotosaurus cappelensis by Kuhn (1971); it was recombined as Heptasaurus cappelensis by Schoch (1999).
