Mesoepiophlebia was named by Nel and Henrotay (1993). It is not extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Bechly (1997).

It was assigned to Epiophlebiinae by Nel et al. (1993), Nel and Jarzembowski (1996); and to Sphenophlebiidae by Bechly (1997).
