Hypsothemis fraseri was named by Whalley (1985). Its type specimen is BMNH In 59109, a hindwing (basal fragment), and it is an impression. Its type locality is Flatstones, Stonebarrow, Charmouth (Jackson collection), which is in an Obtusum marine mudstone in the United Kingdom.
